 Job Description:
The World Bank’s infoDev Climate Technology Program is establishing a network of Climate Innovation Centers (CIC) globally to accelerate the development, deployment, and transfer of locally relevant climate and clean energy technologies. Each Center will provide early stage financing and other services to enable local enterprises to proactively and profitably develop innovative climate technology solutions that meet local needs. With support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Kingdom’s UKAid, and in partnership with the Government of Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) Facility infoDev has launched a Climate Innovation Center in Ethiopia. The Ethiopia Climate Innovation Center (ECIC) is implemented by a consortium led by the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network (HoA-REC&N).

The Ethiopia Climate Innovation Center provides domestic enterprises with a broad range of services including:

    Financing through proof-of-concept grants (up to USD 50K) as well as investment facilitation at more advanced stages.
    Business advisory and training through mentorship, networking, seminars, and other services that build professional expertise.
    Access to market information, local technology information, access to facilities and regional centers.
    Access to policy support through hosting dialogues with government, researching trends and documenting best practices for SME and climate technology regulation.
    Promoting business opportunities for women and outreach on climate innovation.

The ECIC provides a holistic set of early-stage financing, business support and capacity building services to the Ethiopian private sector, including women and rurally based entrepreneurs and business owners, working to develop, launch and grow innovative climate technology ventures that promote Ethiopia’s climate resilience and green growth.

The ECIC seeks qualified professionals for the following positions.

Business Counselor (Reports to Director of Incubation Operations)

Job Summary:

As the primary point of contact for the ECIC entrepreneur clients, the overall objective of the Business Counselor is to provide for the business advisory needs of the client companies of the ECIC, provide high quality business advisory services to client companies, assist them in locating business partners, tapping into sources of financing, and assist clients to understand the kinds of challenges they will be required to overcome in order to successfully commercialize their products.
Responsibilities:

    Evaluate application of entrepreneurs’ and assess applicants’ ability to manage the commercialization of their product / service, viability of the ventures, innovativeness of business and social as well as environmental impact.
    Participate in implementing the ECIC proof of concept and other client intake processes.
    Assess clients’ business support needs in terms of business services required.
    Prepare analysis to be submitted to make investment decisions
    Support ECIC clients in preparing a complete business plan, work plan and budget.
    Understand the amount of financial resources the company requires.
    Develop a program of business as well as technical advisory, training, mentorship programs as well as methods to meet specific gaps in capability of ECIC clients.
    Provide business counseling and coaching to ECIC clients.
    Monitor the progress of the client companies and assist them in making adjustments to their strategy as necessary to accomplish their commercialization goals:
    Develop informational sessions and programs for clients on issues relevant to startup companies.
    Ensure that sub-grants are disbursed in a timely and efficient manner.
    Monitor and visit client companies to ensure compliance to grant agreements.
    Ensure ECIC clients submit required periodic reports, follow up progress and advise clients accordingly.
    The Business Counselor is required to submit reports after each advisory and visit session; submit periodic reports on each client assigned, and activities undertaken during the reporting period.

Requirements:

    Masters in Management or Business Administration or equivalent
    At least 7 years’ experience on credit analysis and appraisal in a commercial bank
    Experience in assessing the financial aspect, the market, as well as the operation of organizations.
    Strong communications, analytical and problem solving skills.
    Experience in working with start-up companies incubating and accelerating the success of entrepreneurs is preferred
    Understanding of the business and investment climate in Ethiopia and knowledge of private sector stakeholders
    Knowledge of donor organizations working in Ethiopia such as World Bank, DFID, AusAid, USAID, etc.
    Must be fluent in spoken and written Amharic and English
    Ability to utilize common office softWare packages such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc.
Remuneration: As per Ethiopia Climate Innovation Center salary scale

Duration of Contract: 1 year with possible extension upon best performance
