Org. Setting and Reporting

The positions is located in the Employment and Social Protection Section of Social Development Policy Division (SDPD) of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Addis Ababa. The Research Intern will be engaged to support the section in its research and analytical work on a range of issues relating to human exclusion, inequality, nutrition security, social protection, and employment.

The internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Section.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the Section to which he/she is assigned.
Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Director of the Division, and the direct supervision of the Chief of Employment and Social Protection Section, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:

•Assist with compiling information and undertake research on policy issues relating to human exclusion, inequality, nutrition security, social protection, employment and skilled migration and remittances and demographics;
•Support data collection activities, as required;
•Undertake desk review of bibliographies for various reports and papers to be produced, and proofread documents;
•Assist with organizing and convening meetings including attending to all relevant preparations;
•Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Section.

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree;

Be a computer literate in standard social research software application.

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
